At any point in time, the prevalence of neck pain is about 12% for the adult female population and 9% for the adult male population. As a matter of fact, the occurrence of Denver neck pain is about half that of lower back pain. Neck pain, specifically a stiff neck, affects 45% of those who work. Oftentimes, they do not miss work as they would with back pain. Resulting from increased flexibility, the neck becomes less stable and does not have as much protection. As the parts of the neck become overused, neck pain results.

Neck pain can be used interchangeably with pain in the shoulder and shoulder pain can sometimes be pain in the neck. The most common causes of neck pain and shoulder pain are injuries to the soft tissues including the muscles, tendons and ligaments, says Dr Rita Cummings. This can be a result from whiplash. Arthritis around the neck can also create pain in the neck and shoulders since the nerves are irritated. Neck and shoulder pain can also be associated with health conditions involving the heart, spinal cord, or lungs.
